Nelson began releasing recordings while still in high school and spent years signed to major labels during which two albums were shelved. Rolling Stone called him a songwriting prodigy at age 18; he has since issued several albums — most recently A Friend From Out of Town (2023) — and received coverage from outlets including Texas Monthly. He has also cultivated an enthusiastic overseas audience, particularly in Japan.
