Dr. James Polk (1940–2024) was an Austin-based pianist, arranger, bandleader, and educator who worked for a decade with Ray Charles and received Grammy nominations for his arranging work. He led the ensemble Centerpeace for many years, founded educational programs, received an honorary Doctor of Music, and is widely regarded as a central figure in Austin’s jazz community; Centerpeace continues performing his repertoire after his passing.
