Mélat doesn’t just sing, she tells stories—of love, identity, and self-discovery—through music that bridges soul, R&B, and cinematic pop with flashes of Amharic woven into her sound. A first-generation Ethiopian-American born and raised in Austin, Texas, she carries her heritage and personal journey into a style that is both intimate and expansive. At the heart of her work is love in all its forms: romantic, platonic, beginning, and ending, because in her eyes love is the only truth.
Known for her rich vocals and lush arrangements, Mélat’s radiance is evident the moment she hits the stage. She has headlined across the country and opened for acclaimed artists such as The Internet, Thundercat, PJ Morton, Kool & The Gang, and more. She has twice been selected as the musical guest for UNHCR’s World Refugee Day celebrations at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and internationally represented the United States at the British Science Museum in London for the premiere of America’s Musical Journey. In sports culture, she opens each Austin FC season with a performance of the national anthem and was featured alongside Matthew McConaughey in Bless the Mood, the anthem for the University of Texas Men’s Basketball team at the Moody Center. Most recently, she MC’d the 2025 MLS All-Star Soccer Celebration in her hometown of Austin.
Mélat’s artistry has been celebrated in Billboard, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, Essence, Vibe, and more. Beyond the stage, she advocates for immigrant and refugee communities as a member of the Leadership Council at American Gateways and uplifts women in the music industry as part of the leadership team for Women in Music Austin.
